Related Services in Special Education

Related services of special education include professional services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, psychological counseling/clinic therapy, audiology services, and social work services. An individual student can receive different types of related services to meet his/her needs at the same time. Therefore, statistics were conducted according to rates of receiving services.

In School Year 2016, there were 91,551 receiving related services provided for students with disabilities who studied at senior high and vocational high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools governed by municipality and county/city governments. There were 34,843 receiving occupational therapy and 31,110 receiving speech-language therapy. In contrast, there were 353 receiving social work services provided only by seven cities and counties. K-12 Education Administration of MOE provided related professional services. There were 1,511 receiving related services including 545 in psychological counseling/clinic therapy, followed by 325 of occupational therapy, and 35 in social work services.
